Research Summary:

Research in the Hood laboratory is focused on 1) plant made industrial proteins and 2) cell wall structure and utility.  To accomplish the first project, genes for enzymes from various sources (fungal, bacterial, etc) are transformed into corn. The regulatory sequences for the genes direct expression to the seed. The dry, stored grain is a stable environment for the enzymes so they can be processed on demand for the industrial application. The current focus is on cellulases and redox enzymes to be applied to plant cell wall deconstruction for biobased products. We are using transcriptomics approaches to understand mechanisms to improve protein accumulation in the seed. For the second project, we are looking at the function of cell wall proteins in specific tissues such as silk and pericarp. We are also striving to understand the function of expansin in the synergy of activity with cellulases to deconstruct cellulose.
